There are many breeds who may resemble Pit Bulls or might be mistaken as Pit Bulls by some people.
This has caused a lot of dogs to be misidentified as Pit Bulls, including in a bite, attack or other incident.
Some of the many breeds that have been frequently mistaken as APBTs or share some similar characteristics include
American Bulldog
Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog
Boerboel
Boxer
Bullmastiff
Black Mouth Cur
Canary Dog
Cane Corso
Dogo Argentino
Dogue De Bordeaux
Fila
Spanish Alano
I have personally had this happen to me. I can't recall how many times people asked me if my Boxer was a Pit Bull or if would say "Pretty Pit Bull". One guy even argued with me that I was just trying to lie and hide that my dog was really a Pit Bull. Why else would it have a docked tail...right
I remember when I was in Petsmart and my Uncle had come with us. A woman came in walking a beautiful brindle Fila, which he commented on as being a Pit Bull and she had to correct him.
I've run into a few people who would say "Nice Pit Bull" when they'd see my American Bulldog.
My friends male Cane Corso was often called a Pit Bull. Even by other people who said "He's a beautiful Pit Bull, we have one that looks like him at home"
I think that any reasonable person could see how this could lead to bites of other breeds being reported as a mixed breed, especially those by mixes or strays. Even in cases where it is reported to have been another breed the media will still report it as a Pit Bull.
Here is just a couple examples.
This story was also in other publications in which it said Pit Bull Attack and then stated that she was bit by an American Bulldog. I've read a couple other versions too. In one story the title had Pit Bull in it and they never even mentioned the ownership of the Pit Bull or the Pit Bull biting the girl. They can't seem to get their story straight.

Pit Bull Mauls 3-Year-Old's Face New York Newsday February 6, 2004
A Bronx family owned a Boxer dog and a German Shepherd puppy that usually were kept in the basement as guard dogs. Two days before the girl was bitten, the family took in a Pit Bull. The 3-year-old was alone playing with the three dogs when a dogfight started. At this point the girl was bitten in the face by the Boxer (also reported to be an American bulldog). It was later acknowledged that the Pit bull (also reported to be a Pit bull mix and a "pet bulldog") was not involved in the attack on the girl
This other 1 is more recent in which a Bullmastiff mauled a woman.

This story which clearly reads mastiff and on the news channel the reporter said 3yr old Bullmastiff.
However right before she reported they ran the "scrolling headlines" which said "Pit Bull Attack". Then she came on and said the truth.
What is up with that? A Bullmastiff and a Pit Bull are 2 very different breeds.
