What registries/kennel clubs register the Pit Bull and which are the most legitimate.
The AKC (American Kennel Club) registers Pit Bulls as American Staffordshire Terrier. The UKC (United Kennel Club) and ADBA (American Dog Breeders Association) registers Pit Bulls as American Pit Bull Terriers. These are the most reputable registries to get your Pit Bull from. Others registries do not require pedigrees, verification that a dog is purebred and have even been known to register dogs they know are not really pure, are stolen or bred the way the pedigrees says.
The AKC accepted AST for registration in 1936. The name was changed so not have too must association with the fighting of the time. The name Staffordshire was chosen for the place in England of which many originated. Some fanciers had wanted the name American Bull Terrier but the Bull Terrier was already a recognized breed and those breeders didn't want the AST having that name. From this time on the AKC excepted APBTs to be dual registered with them. Now they have closed the stud books and only dogs from AKC parents can be registered with them.
The UKC was started specifically to register the APBT because the AKC would not accept them. This was done in 1898. Therefore the UKC is the oldest registry for the APBT. Some AKC dogs are dual registered with the UKC as APBTs. There are also many dogs that are dual registered with the ADBA/UKC and some even AKC/UKC/ADBA.
The ADBA was later started in 1909 to register again only APBTs. They have been registering strictly APBTs for almost 100s, now they have recent become an "all breed" registry to help out ALL dogs in combating the banning/extinction of all breeds.
