Registered means that a persons dog is registered with a kennel club.
The dog is on file with them, has a registration number registered name. They will be registered to the owner. It will also show the breed, date of birth color and other relevant information, including if the dog has a microchip # or Tattoo #.
Register dogs have a pedigree on file which shows their breeding. The pedigree contains their parents, grand parents, great grand parents, ect. It will show if the dogs have any titles, if the parents are Champions or if they have working titles.
When people speak of "papers" they are referring to the dogs being registered because they will have a registration paper from the kennel club.
Just because a dog is registered doesn't mean it will be a good rep of the breed. Anyone can have a registered dog and breed it even if it doesn't meet the standards. It is also to know which kennel club the dog is registered with, ADBA, UKC & AKC are the more reputable in keeping the integrity of the breed. There are several other registries out there which will register anything for a few bucks. They cater to puppy mills and to people banned from legitimate registries. Not everyone who registers with them is a bad breeder/owner but many of them are and do so because they are dishonest about their dogs.
