To know your dogs bloodline you must have the pedigree. If you have it are more then welcome to post it. Then someone can help you with what bloodline the dog comes from.
The bloodline is determined by which dogs are in the pedigree that make up the line, in some cases dogs will have no recognizable line and other cases they will be scatterbred which means bred from too many bloodlines to be considered of a certain type/line and will have random traits.
If you do not have a pedigree then it is likely you will never know the bloodline. Some bloodlines have strong physical attributes due to breeding dogs of like genetic material together for a consistent family. However this is not a 100% accurate way to tell. Colby dogs tend to have a very set type of their physical appearance, however there are other dogs which may look similar to a Colby dog. Also you could have a dog of 4 different bloodlines that resembles more to 1 bloodline so you can't say he's that 1 bloodline just because his physical appearance matches that line. Some lines tend to produce some very close physical similarities, so there may 2 or 3 different lines that look similar to each other.
If someone told you your dog was a certain line, even if the breeder told you this but offered no proof there is a high possibility that they are incorrect or only partially accurate. A lot of times people do not know the bloodline of their dog but if someone says it looks like a "lines name" they will go around repeating that. Other times people just make it up, they hear of a bloodline or 2 out there and they will tell people their dog comes from those lines because its the only lines they know. Most often I have seen Colby, Old Family Red, Jeep & Razor's Edge abused as many dogs are being claimed to be from these lines when they are not.
There are times when breeders may be correct, if they knew their dogs parents and if one of the parents was registered and the other has a pedigree they may have seen these dogs pedigrees even though they were not provided with registration papers. However it is wise to be skeptical when a breeder/dog owner has nothing to back up their claims. Especially if it a random person is just telling you your dog is a "blank". Too many times I've had people try to tell me what my dog is when they have just met me and I already know exactly how my dog is bred. They offer their "expertise" without me asking.
