A bloodline is a family of dogs bred for specific traits. They carry/express these traits and produce those traits consistantly. There are many bloodlines of APBT out there. They are not a different breed but bloodline families within the breed, this applies to all purebred dogs. Within a breed you will find bloodlines.
Bloodlines are created by breeding off a foundation of dogs who possess the traits you'd like to have in a family of dogs. Breedings will be linebred off a foundation male and a foundation female will usually be seen.
Some lines will be easily recognized on looks due to the long time breeding of that line to true form. Some of the lines that may be easy to tell by looking at the dog include Colby, Jeep/Honeybunch, Tab, Razors Edge, & Lonzo.
There are different traints lines may be known for line great working dogs, intelligence, hard mouth, good wind, quickness, agility, conformation, ect.
The best lines have a combination of great traits such as conformation, drive, health, smarts, and such. While most good lines may still not be the total package they generally carry a good deal of positive traits.
Crosses might be done with 2 lines. If both lines have good looks and health, one line has more intelligence and the other more wind a cross could be done to try and bring in the traits into one line. Usually the 1st breeding will not bring a whole litter who have all the traits, you will still have to breed/cull to get what you want.
The lines will usually carry more then just these traits, they may have a certain set temperament and personality. While each are individual they might have personality traits that are passed down which are similar.
Say if you breed a line of dogs for their great health, loving temperaments and conformation, there are the foundation dogs of the line that may "bat" or "swing" at you with their paws in play and for attention, you may inconsequently ad that to your line. Other dogs may often purse their lips together and be very vocal talkers where other lines will not hardly ever "speak". If you linebreed you will get more dogs that do this per litter, but even if you outcross you may get a dog who has the same quirks as a parent or grand parent.
A bloodline might not always produce the same in different hands. If 5 people are breeding the same bloodline it is possible that each breeders strain will differ a little bit. This is due to the dogs they used, personally preference, what they are breeding for and what type of breedings are done among other factors.
Some lines are sadly known for producing inferior temperaments. This may include shy, skittest fearful dogs (possibly leading to fear biters), overly dominant/aggressive dogs, excited biters and other temperament issues.
Some lines also carry health problems which have now been locked in the line, the line is essentially ruined as far as producing good dogs goes the majority of the time. You can end up with dogs that have demodex, cardiac problems, cancer (in some instances, cancer has been shown to be genetic but can also be caused by environmental factors or induced by environment), immune deficiencies, joint degeneration, dysplastic joints, ect. Some lines have poor structure which leads to health problems, especially as they age, they will have joint problems, arthritis and might be crippled at a young age.
