No this is untrue, It is quite the opposite. Tail docking and ear cropping is for working dogs.
Tails should not be docked on the APBT. This is against the written breed standard in both registries. It also would not be docked on a fighting dog due to the fact it is believe that that a lack of tail would cause the dog to lose their balance. This would give them a disadvantage when fighting their opponent.
Ears are cropped out of personal preference, however the majority of fighting dogs have their ears natural vs cropped. If you look at the most well accomplished pit fighting Champion and Grand Champions most of them have natural ears, I'd say around 90% of them. Some believe the ears give the their dog an advantage against "ear suckers" that they wouldn't have if the ears were cropped. An "ear sucker" is a dog who likes to bite the ears and that part of the head. Without the ears their they will still bite in the same spot but cause more damage to the head and it will be much easier for blood to get in the ear canal and inner ear. Since many dog fighters don't care about enhancing looks they also see it as a waste of time, so very few will do it.
Most of the cropped dogs you see are pets or show dogs. The majority of UKC show dogs have their ears cropped, it seems pretty standard with them. Ears do not count as points on a show dog so it is up to the owners personal choice.
For many other breeds docking is done and these are working breeds. Many working breeds are also cropped and some are both cropped and docked. Most of these dogs history does not include fighting at all, while some may have seen some fighting history.
If people continue to spread around rumors of tail docking on Pits it will only help in them being misidentified as other breeds. If rumors like docking/cropping is for fighting dogs then it will only help to damage the reputation of the Pit Bull and their owners.
These are breed which have docking or cropping. This is not a complete list.
American Bulldogs can be either docked, cropped, both or completely natural. It is most common I have found to see them natural.

Cropped
Pit Bull
